This issue affects thousands of gay and lesbian couples and their families throughout Maine. Like other Maine families, LGBT Mainers take on each others burdens and cares. They work and pay taxes. Some have been together for decades. And according to the 2000 census they live in every county in Maine. Of 3,394 same-sex couples who acknowledged themselves in that census, nearly 30% of female couples and 20% of male couples had a child under the age of 18 living at home with them. These couples and their kids are your neighbors and co-workers, relatives and friends
